Below are some notes about getting our phones to scan QR codes well. You need to have the QR code (which is really a web link) open in a browser that you can get back to. If not, you will have to keep logging in each time you scan a clue sign.
Once you've installed the right app for your phone, test it out.
iPhones
For iPhones that support iOS 13.5, the easiest way is to use the Google Chrome app. Once installed, open the app and click on the search field as if you were going to google something. The keyboard will pop-up and with it is an icon for scanning QR codes, click on it, it will access your camera, scan the QR code.
For older phones, the app called QR Reader for iPhone! works well.
Androids
The app called QR Scanner works well.
